Driving Test Information
Test day can be a nerve-racking experience for the best of us, everything you've been working towards coming together, and the hope of gaining that blue certificate to say you can drive on the roads alone, it's also very exciting, so here's a run through of what to expect.
Your instructor will have advised you on a nice quiet time to book your test for, to give yourself the best chance of passing, and will have prepared you fully for what you will be asked to do. You should not be asked to do anything that you wouldn't have already covered with us, we aim to have you prepared to take your test and have every chance of getting the result you want.
On test day, your instructor will collect you for a lesson before the test, which will take you to the centre on time, during which you will have some time to have a final practice.
Your instructor will ensure you arrive at the test centre in plenty of time to use the toilet and have any last minute refreshments.
You will then meet your examiner who will require that you sign an Insurance and Residency Declaration whilst they check both parts of your Driving License (Card and Paper Counterpart), unless you have an old style license, in which case you'll need to bring your passport for Photo ID.
Then you will have the option of inviting your instructor on the test with you, to sit in the back and observe. The instructor cannot play any part in the test and must remain silent at all times, but it can be reassuring and/or useful to have them there for future development or digesting what happened on the test after it's all over. It is by no means compulsory, and most pupils choose to go alone with the examiner.
When your leave the Test Centre you will be asked to read a number plate from 20 metres, the minimum requirement. Your instructor should check this on your first lesson.
You will then lead your way to the car where the examiner will inspect the vehicle for roadworthiness and then ask you two simple questions about the car, which your instructor will have helped you prepare for.
Once in the car the examiner will explain some information about how the test will develop and what you should expect.
Generally the test lasts between 30-40 minutes, consisting of one reversing exercise, approximately 20 minutes of independent driving, following a sat nav or road signs, and possibly and emergency stop.
When you're back to the test centre, the examiner will tell you your result almost immediately in the car, and ask you if you'd like your instructor to listen to the debrief.
Whether you have passed or failed, your instructor will drive you home so that you can relax and contact family or friends on the way home. Your instructor will also offer further advice for future development.
Once you've passed you have the option of extra driver training in Pass Plus, Motorway driving and Refresher courses, should you need to.
